Police in Da Nang moved quickly to apprehend a foreign national accused of carrying out a gold shop robbery late last night.

According to Major General Nguyen Huu Hop, Director of Da Nang City Police, the suspect was captured just hours after the robbery took place on Nui Thanh Street. He was identified as Dale James, a 29-year-old U.S. citizen (born in 1996), and arrested while hiding in a rented apartment in An Hai Ward, Da Nang.

Authorities are still investigating the case, including possible motives and whether the suspect acted alone. The rapid response demonstrates the effectiveness of Vietnamese law enforcement in handling serious incidents.

When Foreigners Face Legal Trouble

Cases like this highlight an important reality: when a foreign national is arrested in Vietnam, they face not only criminal charges but also language barriers, cultural differences, and a legal system they may not fully understand. Without proper legal support, even a minor issue can escalate into a life-changing problem.

This is why having the right attorney is essential. Legal representation is not just about defending against accusations, it is about ensuring fair treatment, due process, and clear communication throughout the case.

What To Do If You Get Into Trouble in Vietnam

If you find yourself in difficulty with the police, immigration, or other authorities in Vietnam, follow this process immediately:

Step 1 – Contact SJP First
📞 Zalo / WhatsApp: +84 (0) 707 952 629
📧 Email: simon@sjpconsultancy.com
Your first call should be to SJP. We will provide immediate advice and connect you with trusted local lawyers who know how to protect your interests.

Step 2 – Do Not Sign Anything Without Advice
In Vietnam, written statements carry significant weight. Never sign or agree to documents you do not fully understand. Wait until SJP has reviewed them.

Step 3 – Request Legal Representation
Insist politely but firmly that you want legal support. Authorities must allow you the opportunity to have a lawyer (be careful what you say to a lawyer – you do not have the same confidentality in Vietnam as you may have in your home country).

Step 4 – Stay Calm and Cooperative
Showing respect and composure is crucial. Arguing, resisting, or being confrontational can worsen the situation. Let SJP handle the communication.

Step 5 – Keep Your Family or Employer Informed
Once SJP is contacted, we can liaise with your family, employer, or embassy to ensure they are updated. This prevents unnecessary panic and ensures your side of the story is represented clearly.

Why Hiring the Right Lawyer Matters

For expatriates and foreign nationals in Vietnam, a good attorney does more than appear in court. The right legal support ensures:

Knowledge of Vietnamese Law – A skilled lawyer understands how local laws are applied in practice, not just in theory.
Protection of Rights – Legal professionals ensure that suspects are treated fairly and that their fundamental rights are not overlooked.
Clear Guidance – A trusted lawyer explains each step of the process in plain language, bridging gaps in culture and communication.
Peace of Mind – With experienced legal counsel, foreigners can face difficult situations knowing that someone is protecting their interests.
